Exporting from India to the United States: a planning guide
Define the US importing party, research the product’s customs and agency requirements, and price the full delivery scenario before accepting an order.
Identify the importer and the product
Start the project with the US customer’s legal entity, delivery address, and the party that will arrange import clearance. Ask that party or its customs representative to confirm the US classification and current treatment for the actual goods. Keep the manufacturer’s proposed code as a research input rather than copying it directly into a destination declaration.
US product requirements can involve agencies beyond customs. For food, FDA’s import guidance addresses facility registration, prior notice, and importer responsibilities. Other product types need their own agency research. A supplier certificate or a successful shipment of a similar item does not establish that the new product meets all applicable requirements.
- Name the clearance contact before quoting destination delivery.
- Describe materials, use, packaging, and product condition.
- Record agency questions separately from the tariff calculation.
Build the delivery and payment scenario
Ask for freight quotations using the same package measurements, route, ready date, and delivery responsibilities. Compare port or airport delivery with final warehouse delivery explicitly. Include destination handling and brokerage estimates only when their scope has been confirmed. Keep duties and taxes unresolved until the importing party has reviewed the product and origin assumptions.
For samples or food sent by international mail, revisit the current FDA prior-notice page rather than reusing an old checklist. The page contains implementation updates that can change how a submission is handled. Save the date of the guidance used and ask the recipient who will make any required filing.

- Review current FDA guidance where the product is covered.
