Exporting from India to the UK: classification and importing responsibilities

Distinguish Great Britain from Northern Ireland, establish the importing party, and check current India agreement and tariff guidance for the exact product.

Define the UK destination precisely

Start with the final delivery address and confirm whether the goods are going to Great Britain or Northern Ireland. The UK government’s import checklist distinguishes the relevant EORI arrangements and directs users through classification, declarations, and product checks. Ask the customer which entity will be the importer and who will make the customs declaration.

Record a detailed product description before using the tariff lookup. Materials, intended use, production method, and packaging can matter. Keep the proposed commodity code and its supporting information in the project so the importer can review them. Do not treat an Indian research code as a complete UK declaration code.

  • Record the destination territory and importer.
  • Confirm the customer’s declaration or broker arrangement.
  • Use the official tariff for the destination and shipment date.

Check the agreement and the cost bases

The UK government maintains an India trade-deal collection with implementation and agreement guidance. Check it alongside the current tariff when considering preferential treatment. Establish the origin requirement and evidence applicable to the product instead of assuming every Indian shipment receives the same concession.

Keep customs valuation, duty, import VAT, freight, and final delivery as separate research items. A quoted product price does not determine all of those amounts. Ask the importing party to confirm tax treatment and any recoverability assumptions before interpreting an estimate as the permanent economic cost.

Agree the commercial handover

Compare supplier offers using the same delivery endpoint and quantity. Ask forwarders for dated quotes based on packed dimensions and weight. Agree who provides the origin evidence, invoice, packing list, and any product-specific paperwork. Use Traderoz to save both a supported base case and an unresolved-cost list; obtain final current-rule review from the importer or its representative before shipping.

  • Keep the agreement guidance and tariff research date.
  • Separate cash needed at import from potentially recoverable tax.
  • Reconcile document names, units, and final quantities.
