Exporting from India to Nepal: plan the border handover

Research the actual India-Nepal movement, importing party, product treatment, and border services rather than assuming proximity removes trade formalities.

Define the route and the responsible parties

Start with the actual border location, transport arrangement, consignee, and final delivery point in Nepal. Identify who handles the goods and paperwork on each side. Ask transport providers to separate the line-haul price from border handling, waiting, transfer, and onward delivery charges. Keep the agreed scope in writing.

The Embassy of India in Kathmandu describes the bilateral trade and transit framework, including the Treaty of Trade and Treaty of Transit. Those references provide context for research; they do not establish one treatment for every India-to-Nepal shipment. Confirm the product and movement with the Nepal importer and its customs representative.

  • Record the border point and final destination.
  • Name the Nepal clearance contact.
  • Distinguish bilateral trade from goods moving under a transit arrangement.

Check the importer and product requirements

Use Nepal Customs’ EXIM system as an official reference when discussing the importer’s registration arrangements. The portal did not reliably load during this review, so ask the importer to provide current confirmation directly. Review classification, origin, any product controls, and the required document set before accepting a delivered-price obligation.

Do not infer a general zero-duty position from the existence of a bilateral agreement. Record the actual current basis for any treatment claimed by the importer. Keep documentary-origin questions separate from where the goods are collected or the currency used for payment.

Reconcile the commercial and physical shipment

Prepare a package summary with gross weight, dimensions, quantity, and product descriptions. Ask the buyer to review the invoice and packing details before the vehicle or consignment leaves. Use Traderoz to compare border-to-border and final-delivery scenarios without merging them into one unexplained estimate. Save the route, source dates, and importer confirmations so a repeat shipment can be checked against the same assumptions.

  • Confirm current EXIM and product requirements with the importer.
  • Identify who bears storage or waiting charges.
  • Review the documents again if the route or goods change.
